I'd like to make a rag quilt throw pillow, approximately 16-18" square. Does anyone have a pattern link to share? I'm looking for a freebie. Thanks!

Jennie, I made a rag pillow to be used on a bed, it was pretty easy I decided to use the size squares I used in the matching quilt, I layed out the squares to the size pillow I wanted, sewed the rows together and I used matching flannel for the back, sewed it up right sides together, turned it right sides out and stuffed it with batting...easy!  Sorry I don't know a website for instructions but it was very easy winging it!!!  good luck!!   Pixie

Thanks Pixie. I think I'm just going to make mine in squares too. How wide should my seam allowances be? 1/2"?

Pillow top is done!!  Smiley   Should I quilt a back or just use one layer of fabric?

After I add the back, should I wash the pillow at that point before stuffing so the seam allowances will be frayed?

Thanks!

A quilt back would be nice as well as fabric!  I guess it's just what you feel like doing! lol  If you decide on the fabric I would imagine 1 layer is fine if it feels nice! Yes, I would wash it first to rag it up, then stuff, I can't wait to see the final product!!

The 1 and only pillow I made I used the flannel that matched the quilt I made which happened to be all flannel!  So anything goes really!  have fun!!

I just finished clipping the seams. Thank you so much Pixie for telling me about the special scissors for clipping. I can't imagine trying to cut through those layers w/o them. Thank you!!!    Kiss

Ann, you should do this. It's quick, simple, and gives the satisfaction of completing a quilt project in a short period of time. I get frustrated when I start a big project then it sits for ages till I can get back to it.

I'm still not sure about the pillow back. I'll think about it tomorrow. (Just call me Scarlet O'Hara!  Grin )

I'm still pulling a Scarlet on the pillow backing, but I thought you might like to see the pillow top. It's not washed yet, so it doesn't have that soft, fuzzy look. It's very "girlie" which is exactly what I wanted. I occasionally grab a pink quilt or afghan and tell everyone that I need a "pink moment." All these boys around here can be a bit overwhelming at times!!  Wink   Cheesy  Now I'll have my rag pillow, too!  Wink   Grin

Thanks for taking a look!!

OH I love it!!  great job Jennie!!  It will be a soft comfy place to rest!!  Thanks for posting the picture!!

I just went to the Amish fabric store and found material print that has a little boy on a International Harvester pedal tractor on a farm with a barn, cows and chickens!  The background is a light mustard yellow, I chose contrasting fabric, get this, one is a hay bale print!, the other is the red mingled color of the tractor!  I'll be making Montgomery a tractor rag quilt for Christmas!  He loves tractors, rides our tractor with his papaw Coby until he falls asleep!  I can't wait to see his face when it's done.  I'll post pic's when I complete it!   The only different thing i'll do with this is make the flat back side of the quilt all one color!  wish me luck!   Pixie

Thank you, Cathy! I thought of you as I looked at all this pink!!  Smiley  I knew you would love it!!  Smiley

Pixie, the tractor quilt will be too cute!!! Montgomery will LOVE it!!! This weekend I bought some flannel with jungle animals to make rag quilts for the little boys. We'll all have to share pictures and keep each other motivated!!  Smiley

I ended up layering flannel and the butterfly pink fabric for the backing and just doing straight lines of stitching to hold them together. I stitched the raw edges of front and back together and clipped the seam allowances. The pillow is washed, but I want to wash it once more before stuffing.

Thanks for all the advice!  Smiley

Blessings,
Jennie

Jennie,
Your rag pillow is so pretty. I have never made a rag quilt/pillow. May have to try that some day.

Pixie, Montgomery is going to squeal with delight when he sees his quilt.

Blessings,
